Seriously tongue in cheek though. No pun intended...

Close - great song.....

I KNOW IT'S OVER

Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
And as I climb into an empty bed
Oh well. Enough said.
I know it's over - still I cling
I don't know where else I can go
Oh ...
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
See, the sea wants to take me
The knife wants to slit me
Do you think you can help me ?
Sad veiled bride, please be happy
Handsome groom, give her room
Loud, loutish lover, treat her kindly
(Though she needs you
More than she loves you)
And I know it's over - still I cling
I don't know where else I can go
Over and over and over and over
Over and over, la ...
I know it's over
And it never really began
But in my heart it was so real
And you even spoke to me, and said :
"If you're so funny
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
And if you're so clever
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very entertaining
Then why are you on your own tonight ?
If you're so very good-looking
Why do you sleep alone tonight ?
I know ...
'Cause tonight is just like any other night
That's why you're on your own tonight
With your triumphs and your charms
While they're in each other's arms..."
It's so easy to laugh
It's so easy to hate
It takes strength to be gentle and kind
Over, over, over, over
It's so easy to laugh
It's so easy to hate
It takes guts to be gentle and kind
Over, over
Love is Natural and Real
But not for you, my love
Not tonight, my love
Love is Natural and Real
But not for such as you and I, my love
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my ...
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can even feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my head
Oh Mother, I can feel the soil falling over my ...

Great lyrics. Great song from a truly great album.

Re: Most Depressing Song?

I find the more obvious subject matter of Joy Division's Closer worse than anything off Unknown Pleasures, although whenever I'm listening to UP i'm marvelling at the music produced too much to contemplate how gloomy it is. In the Lips household it's regarded as the best LP ever.

The most depressing song on UP for me is She's Lost Control, but chiefly because my brother's an epileptic.

I was playing Closer on the way home tonight. Soothes my depression. New Dawn Fades and Day of the Lords for me, but yeah - she's lost control is bleak. Atmosphere for sad, though.

Always Look On The Bright Side used to depress the hell out of me, through the 90s anyhow.

New Dawn Fades, Day of the Lords and most of Closer can be cathartic when your really fucked off. Heart and soul can even be a bit funky on occasions. Temptation 12" can even be uplifting.

And yeah, Tim Buckley is a bit Leonard Cohen on occasions.

Re: Most Depressing Song?

Atmosphere by Joy Division - so depressing it's uplifting.
The Midnight Cowboy soundtrack - ditto.
Nick Cave - The Weeping Song - ditto
Ian Dury - My old Man

Morrissey - anything off Ringleader of the Tormentors - really really depressing self pitying suicide inducing material.
Kenny Rogers - Ruby (don't take your love to town)
Anything at all by Section 25 - took all the hope and melody out of Joy Division songs and produced something truly wrist slashing.

I'm sure there'll be more....

Only those who dream will someday see their dreams converted to reality
