Topic: Whisky...

Do you drink it? Do you like it?

I've just started dabbling with it. Was given a large glass of Chivas Regal by a Scotsman, who when asked how I should drink it, replied, without ice or water and slowly.

Interesting drink insofar as there is the initial taste, the taste left in your mouth, the burn as it goes down and then the glow.

I've got a bottle of an average brand in the garage which I get stuck into if I'm going to have a music night, but on on a recent trip away I did a session solely on Johnny Walker black label. I had around ten, knew I'd had a drink but didn't feel drunk. And no hangover the day after too.

It's got to be less fattening than ale surely.

I went through a period of drinking chivas regal when i thought i was hunter thompson. Its lovely. Cant face whisky these days. Probably the aversion therapy of drinking half a bottle a night all those years a go.

Father-in-law, in true Jock fashion, has some proper expensive bottles all of which, in my humble opinion, taste of piss. Worst alcoholic beverage by a country mile. Rather drink fucking WKD.

Have the same problem with gin and pernod. Come to think of it, with most spirits. Can't drink any of them as I think they re wine and drink the same way.

Some very messy nights have put me off forever.

Re: Whisky...

only time I ever got done for drunk and disorderly was after downing double whiskey and lemonades with a mate, like it was pop, during one of those happy hours they used to do in all the wine bars at teatime in Bradford.

Going back a lot of years but we started at 6 and was under the town clock at 8!

Never touched the stuff since.

I like a bourbon. Obviously it ain't whisky, but I make a mean old fashioned. The lady in my life drinks them too.
Bitters (orange if you can find it), sugar, orange peel, a gentlemens pouring of bourbon, shit lads of ice and a splash flavoured syrup.

Acemans.

I like a nice pale Islay single malt.  Smooth on the way in and then a thumping afterglow.

If I'm going for the warmth of a blended then I go for a good Bushmills from norn iron.

I don't do blends and I would spit feathers at a single malt tainted with water or ice. Vodka is always a no-no.

Rum. Proper stuff - Havana Club 'Anejo' with the black label ideally, although I took a fancy to next doors Cockspur's VSOR bottle at Christmas. Drunk straight - no ice no mixer. Loverly.

My brother saw a description of what whisky (or any spirit I guess) did to your kidneys once and has barely touched the stuff since.

Re: Whisky...

Reminds me of when I worked in a hotel bar years ago - you'd get all these blokes for whom working away and expenses were obviously not routine concepts, who'd come out of the restaurant into the residents bar, making a big show of going "Hmmmm, lets have a look at what you have on the top shelf... [not a lot, it was a shit bar - Glenmorangie, Glenfiddich and that was that] ...ooooh, I'll have a Glenmorangie......"

"....with Coke"

Divs.

At least once I said I'd bring the drinks over to them, poured out a double Bells and Coke once they'd wondered off to sit down and charged them [well, their employers] £6 for the privilege. No-one noticed.

There's a company that specialises in blended whiskies called 'compass box'. I've never tried them but they won the award one year for the best whisky, and then were stripped of it when the purists got all uppity about it being blended. Like I say, never tried it myself, but it sounds worth a go.

Re: Whisky...

http://www.compassboxwhisky.com/home.html these? Whilst not a purist (my palate means I know what I like and I know what I don't, I just don't tell others what they should like, which is usual for me) however I draw the line at companies that call themselves "artisan"....

Re: Whisky...

Islay malts for me as well .. Laphroaig being my first choice.. so seaweedy iodine that its almost TCP taste.

Talisker from Skye another good 'un; peppery.

I always have a bit of water with it; if you've never tried it, give it a go; it really releases the flavours.

However - getting pissed on it is dangerous.. I am completely useless the next day; not thumping headaches or owt.. just can't move; like all the strengths been sucked out of my muscles.. weird, it is.

TBF someone did once try to convert me to the drop of water version, I think I have got too used to it neat.

Didn't finish work till 10pm last night. On the way home bought a 4.95 bottle of teachers, which I consumed in minutes.
Unable to find the words to describe how cheap I felt when I woke up this morning.

Re: Whisky...

Had a nice tip off at Chrimbo, major distillery selling off £35 quid tackle to Tesco's to be marketed as it's own brand single malt, selling £18.

They did the same last year, where you could get an 18 year old single malt at Aldi for less than £20 which was in fact a £45 bottle.

I don't really have the palate for the good stuff, but I do enjoy a drop of the Irish - Jamesons though, not that protestant whiskey

Here lies the body of Mary Lee; died at the age of a hundred and three. For fifteen years she kept her virginity; not a bad record for this vicinity
