Topic: Just listening to music

I'd kind of stopped, why I don't know.  We've just moved the dining table into the conservatory and bought a sofa to go in its place do its a nice TV free space great for taking a kip, reading and listening to music.

Just had a wander though some Faces, Pale Fountains, Cocteau Twins, Smiths, Humble Pie, Richie Havens, Judy Tzuke, Janet Kay, Jam,......

Bliss.  I'm back on it, I feel very enriched.

I'd offer you a beer, but I've only got six cans.

Re: Just listening to music

Nothing like music.

When I get the chance, and the kids have moved out - music room for me, hi-fi'd up to fuck.

When I worked in the lab/marketing dept at Wharfedale speakers, the kit I had in my council house bedroom would give audiophile reviewers a run for their money...

Re: Just listening to music

I've just dug out a Nad amp and CD player from the loft.  Fixed some decent ish JVC headphones and bought a phone jack to phono cable.  I can't see me getting a bit obsessed some time soon.

I'd offer you a beer, but I've only got six cans.

You can easily do £100k on a Linn set-up. Sad thing is I always picture those that do playing 'Brothers in Arms' on it.....

I've got the bug back Trav.  The amp is a start, it's OK sounding but tbh the headphones are spot on and I think I might even go for a cheap second hand mini Denon dab cd thing as I will not be blasting it out, it will be cans only and the odd glass of whiskey.

I'm laying here listening to Tank Park Salute with actual tears rolling down my face.  Ace isn't it?

I'd offer you a beer, but I've only got six cans.

Got an original NAD 3020 in the loft. Still works but the lad has got my Tannoy Mercury Golds, so not, currently in use.

I'm so obsessed/controlled by music that it's like it's part of my dna.

The old question,  would you be deaf or blind if you had to Choose?

It would have to be get rid of the eyesight.

You can hear, touch and hold loved ones.

Couldn't stand a life without music, I'm still as giddy and obsessive as I was in my early teens.

(Cuntish sentence alert...!)   It drives me, excites me, consoles me and consumes me.

Glad you're back on it Reggie.

Also, I've never had what you would class as a decent stereo but everything sounds mint to me no matter what I've had.. I am thinking of upgrading a bit though

I know what you mean.  My mate is looking to promote some Welsh bands in Leeds so I will keep you posted.  I prefer to trawl the archives for old nostalgic stuff that pushed old buttons.  I often get into an album and it can stay in the car for 6 months.  At home though I just build my awesome spotify playlist and trawl YouTube on the whole.

I've only ever built something on a budget when I was younger.  I did have a Technics thing a few years ago that was quite nice but a bit "shelf at Dixons".  Nothing wrong with that but it wasn't interchangeable as the cables were specific flat ones with bespoke connectors so I got bored with it. The little Denon thing seems favourite.  Tons on Ebay.

I picked that Denon midi up, with Technics decks wired up to it. Could do with some better speakers

TV more or less defunct in our place now

Yep, its decent, but a little pointless as the radio doesnt work and I dont play CDs ... it really is just and amp and speakers.

Buy records fialry often, old classics mainly to put in a collection for my little lad. The decks are fun for him, though the laptop seems more his jam.

Re: Just listening to music

RP - I had a fallow period in the late 90's - just kinda stopped - kids and work I suppose.  I got back on it early 00's digging out new stuff and getting back on the vinyl thing.  I have kept my collection through thick and thin.

For the last ten years I have had a dedicated room to play music - wife very understanding for once!  Currently it is the conservatory and also houses the desktop.

I too have never bothered with some swanky set up.  I've an old Cambridge amp of ebay fopr twenty notes and one of them MP3 turntables - got it for a tenner of ebay.  I have a CD player a friend gave me that does not get a huge amount of use.  The speakers are some old Technics I had with a midi system I had in 1994.  I did buy the most expensive speaker wire - not sure I can hear the difference mind.

I come out to my music room and will chuck something on daily.  Love it.

I love that bit.  I'm leaning toward the Denon thing as I can input the phone (which has surprisingly good sound with my JVC cans on) and run the sound through the amp to the cans to see if it's richer.

There's this too though as well http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Blaupunkt-NE- … 1438.l2649

I think I've got used to flat sound of digital and need to get back that crispness you only really get with a good set up (and vinyl to be honest but that's another decision sometime in the future.  The beauty with streaming though is that I can go from The Streets to Dean Freidman via early Sabbath in 30 minutes for free.

I'd offer you a beer, but I've only got six cans.

Re: Just listening to music

I had records that I knew where the scratch was and I loved the scratch too.  I even had tapes that I'd used so much there was ghosting of old tracks and I loved that too.

Got a bag of tapes in the loft too.  I had two Fisher "Studio Standard" (yeah right) tape decks back in the day, paired with my Pioneer SA amp, Sansui Tuner, JVC / Ortofon deck (with Jumbo Records slipmat of course, Goodmans speakers (weak link).   Ah the memories.

Anyone else used to walk round Dixons / Superfi / Richer Sounds (North Street Obviously) and test the tape deck "soft ejects".   General rule was that if it clanged out like Arkwright's till it was shit and if it glided it was mustard.

I'd offer you a beer, but I've only got six cans.

It's the older one I'm looking at mate.  Quite why anyone would pay the best part of 300 sovs for a slightly different design and identical functionality of one at 50 is beyond me.
