Re: Wine of the week

There's an M&S just as i get off the train now, but i'll be fucked if i'm buying wine at their prices.

Since i don't know much about wine i generally just go on ones that tesco have a deal on, in the more expensive section they'll do a couple of bottles half price. I don't usually spend over 6 quid on a bottle and they're normally very decent.

I'll get back to you if i remember any names.

Re: Wine of the week

M&S do a very good Barbera d'Asti for six quid or so, if you like a nice fruity red.

That Rioja with the laughing cavalier on was the best, like opium in a bottle.

Did anyone hear on the news a little while back; they were going on about the shit that get put's into wine... some of which literally is shit. yikes

Fish guts, chemicals, you name it. It's not the cheap pish neither, they reckon most of it is in the mid ranged wines (£5 to £10 in supermarkets).

Re: Wine of the week

They've always used some fish stuff in wine, it's in Guinness too, loads of stuff.

Do you mean isinglass finings, made from fish swim bladders?

It's been used for a long time to clarify beer and wine after fermentation as it causes the yeast to flocculate and settle to the bottom quicker.

It's still used in the production of many real ales.

Re: Wine of the week

I didn't realise that was the case - seemed like quite a rank thing to put into a drink to me but I guess it does the job then.

There was a lot of other quite foul things they've been putting in (only remember the fish guts as it stood out in my mind). But there was definitely a big who-ha going on.

Lamura Nero d"Avola, from Sicily

http://www.oddbins.com/product_images/Detail/52643_bottle.jpg

Very nice, light with only slightly fruity richness. Or some bollocks like that.

And a white:

Very drinkable. Which is obviously good, seeing that's what you do with wine. It's not like bleach or sand which you can't drink.

I have NEVER even sampled a glass of wine in my whole life. I find the smell of it, especially red, repungent.

Strange really I suppose.

I love wine, everything about it, the smell, taste, variety, bottles, everything.

Just on another Winemaker's Lot, Syrah from Chile now.

Re: Wine of the week

Nero d'Avola fair rocks. I've just got through a very nice Barbera d'Asti from my local supermarket. Bit lighter than the Nero d'Avola. Can get them at most supermarkets in the UK, bit more than a fiver but very good. Very easy to drink. 13%. Am currently singing the paint off the walls to Ray Charles version of The Witchita Lineman. Ma, mi scusate i miei vicini. "And the Witchita Lineman, that's me baby, is stiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiill on the line."
