Gang of Four? Sisters of Mercy? Bridewell Taxis?

My personal favourite are The Three Johns.

"BLAME IT ON THE AFRI-K-AAAAANER..."  They were indeed a fantastic live act.

If you're talking PURE Leeds though, there aren't many to choose from and you might have to give it to The Bridewell Taxis.

Re: Best Band Ever To Come Out of Leeds

I'll risk the hoots of derision and nominate The Kaiser Chiefs. You'd be hard pushed to find another band from Leeds that anyone outside Yorkshire has heard of.

If best means pushing back musical boundaries then they wouldn't stand a chance, but if means putting Leeds on the map they're the only candidates.

Saw loads of people at Wembley with wristbands from the concert.

There's always Chumbawamba wink

or Christie yikes

Menston

Menston is a village and civil parish in the county of West Yorkshire, England. Along with Burley in Wharfedale, Menston is part of Wharfedale Ward in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford.

Re: Best Band Ever To Come Out of Leeds

Truth is there haven't really been any great bands to come out of Leeds, unless Goths your poison.

BLB's right about Kaiser Chiefs - their Mum and Dads may have a Leeds postcode but Menstons Menston.

Gang of 4/ Scritti Politti/ Soft Cell/ Cud/ Mekons were students from elsewhere who happened to form a band in Leeds. Utah Saints were from Harrogate.

Aside from WP, the best I can think of is Red Lorry Yellow Lorry.

Excellent live band. If anyones got a copy of 'Live at Leeds Poly', that 17 year old at the front (moshpit ?) with the floppy fringe doing a pissed up dance is me that is.

It certainly isnt the bastard Kaiser Chiefs. My wheely bin's got more soul than those fakes!

But The WP can be discounted on the same lines as those others who were merely students in Leeds.  Gedge is originally from Manchester.  You'd never quote James as being a great Leeds band, even though Tim Booth's from over this way.

Re: Best Band Ever To Come Out of Leeds

Yep Gedge is from Middleton and was a student. Were RLYL students? It doesn't really matter whether they were students or not, it matters whether they formed, wrote, recorded, rehearsed, and played in Leeds.

You either have to accommodate that or accept that henderson is right and that only leaves a punch up between:

The Magnificent 7
Abrasive Wheels
Flowers For Agatha
The Craters
Goff Jackson and The Hun (though I guess they may have also been students)
The Bridewells
Salvation
Black Bin Liner
The Rhythmn Sisters

come on, look at that list and tell me Henderson wasn't right. Given that Between Vince and Hilaire (is he still on here?) used to strip naked at the opening chord of the set... I rest my case.

Fiery and Mick you might want to fight your own corners but if it comes down to a vote don't forget there are three Butter Cookies on here and only two Hang The Dance and one Age of Chance.

I forgot Toxic Waste, what about Colin Bailey Rae and all the other new bands.

Gang of Four & Three Johns

After playing all these goth festivals I'm tired of Sisters tributes acts!

A man may fight for many things. His country, his friends, his principles, the glistening tear on the cheek of a golden child. But personally, I'd mud-wrestle my own mother for a ton of cash, an amusing clock and a sack of French p*rn.
