The Northern Monkey, Leeds

http://www.northernmonkey-leeds.co.uk/

Even if you don't make The Northern Monkey your "regular haunt", you have to come and have a look now we're up and running to support a couple of local lads who aren't supported by a brewery, aren't part of a chain and haven't really got a f*cking clue what they're doing but are gonna have a laugh learning!

Lunch and drinks for the city based boys, girls and shoppers, after work food and drinks for the city based boys, girls, shoppers and borderline alcoholics and then anything goes for anyone that wants it thereafter!

Open 12 til we decide to close 6 days a week.

We might not get to be an Oporto (yet!) but we are going to try and be something where people can just come in and be themselves and where you can let your hair down (ironically I haven't got any) and have a drink, have a laugh and be part of the family while hopefully enjoying some of the best music available in town. We're an oasis of great music in the middle of a desert of r&b/cheesy dance shite in this part of town so you owe it to yourselves to come and check us out - Leeds Guide thinks we're doing a bloody good job, I'm sure you will too!

Anyone been here?

Sounds pretty good from the blurb.

Also sounds expensive.

Far too many pretentious tossers in Leeds these days, one of the good things about a night out in Bradford still.

Been twice, already a haunt for lads pre and post match. Can't say I care for it, cold and unremarkable. I give it 12 months tops, there are far too many pubs that do it better.

I was in Saturday before the match. I thought it was ok but the police liked it that much they spent 10 minutes filming it.

I don't even understand what that stuff is meant to be.

Still, I have to drink it out of necessity when on a tour of duty down south as it's usually the only non lager option.

Shit, which one?

I've been a ton of times - a) for the reasons above but b) cos it's a bloody good bar, good music and unpretentious.  I worked with one of the owners for years and he's a top mate. I used to go in q regualrly b4 they took over, now I try to go more often.

I love London - for football matches. The buzz of rolling off the train at Kings Cross with yer pals is great.

Pie and Mash ain't bad if you leave off that fucking liquor shit. Whats wrong wi' proper gravy? Parsley sauce is for fish you muppets.

Other than that it's a largely a dump full of gobshite cockneys, flat beer, kebab shops, Girls Aloud, Amy Winehouse, overpaid footballers, heavily cut drugs, television shithouses, Pete Doherty, tabloid journalists, Aussies, Kiwi's, Sonia off Eastenders and any number of other cunts you wouldn't want to bump into.

Re: The Northern Monkey, Leeds

One of the 'lads' on the SC site is involved - no grassing involved,  he's always marketing the place on there,  especially the Sunday evening gigs.

He seems an OK bloke and others seem to enjoy the scene - never tried it but definitely would if I didn't live 220 miles away....

Re: The Northern Monkey, Leeds

Tell us more about the DJs.  One is something like an Everton or Tranmere fan isn't he?

I haven't been drinking in town for over a month due to being ill but I nearly always try to get to the NM, except after Leeds matches at ER as it's not the sort of atmosphere to take your bird to then big_smile  They're great lads running it, it's a bit like Al Murray of the North sometimes and Man U fans probably wouldn't appreciate the bar's attitude towards their team.  Rightly so too.

Anyway I think it's sound, I really do, and they work their collectives off to earn a living, if they do in fact earn a living.  Also have always liked Oporto but it's at the other end of town.

..Will be featuring in an item looking ahead to the game at Norwich hopefully, as a venue that's full of increasingly nervous Leeds fans every other Saturday...

They love the name Northern Monkey down south, panders to all their preconceptions..
