Topic: How would you describe your back passage?

Following on from the Sniffer Clarke Thread

From Wikipedia

ginnel (plural ginnels)
(UK, especially Yorkshire and Lancashire) A narrow passageway or alley often between terraced houses.

snicket (plural snickets)
(Northern England) A narrow passage leading from one place to another.

In conclusion is seems that the differentiator is terraced houses.

Re: How would you describe your back passage?

We had a load of footpaths which surrounded our little estate when I grew up.  Sort of old railway colliery lines and cart tracks and we called them "the back paths".  Any other was a ginnel.

I'd offer you a beer, but I've only got six cans.

Re: How would you describe your back passage?

In the first meaning, I'd use ginnel but if it were the the cobbles between the rows of terrace houses that then bin men could get down it was simply "The backs"

As for the second meaning, Badger's ninepence or today the chewed orange.
