Topic: Royal Sovereign, Kirkstall Road

On a whim, digging out my my battered paperback copy of Penguin Modern Poets 10, "The Mersey Sound" (Adrian Henri, Roger McGough, Brian Patten), I chanced upon some marginalia in the form of a verse dedication marked "Royal Sovereign, Kirkstall Road, Leeds 4, June 1968", one I had scribbled to Adrian Henri on the occasion of his reading in the upstairs bar. I remember this occasion particularly because after the gig I recited a poem to him, one I had written--very much in his style--about my girlfriend Angela, a student nurse whom I had met while MC-ing a soul disco at LGI and who was very much the Adrian Henri type (small, blonde, and from Oswaldtwistle).

Anyone remember this pub? Please don't tell me it's not still there.

These ramblings of a superannuated mind may mean little to most OMJers (except perhaps otis, I Luv White, and possibly Barabassdy) but the memory comes back strong and good.

The Royal Sovereign was situated on Commercial Road. This pub was closed in 1977 and demolished for redevelopment.

Re: Royal Sovereign, Kirkstall Road

Is this the same Royal Sovereign? It says Commercial Road, but my Leeds geography is a bit vague after all these years.

If so, then another sad loss. A good pub in its day.

Re: Royal Sovereign, Kirkstall Road

It's Commercial Road out as far as Kirkstall Lights. Then it's Kirkstall road, then it's New Road Side, then its Rawdon Road. All gets a bit hazy after there.
