Re: Modern football
Arsenal, on and off the pitch, are the emodiment of everything that is wrong with the modern game at the highest level in the country. They refined a business model to the nth of it's possibilities, happy to maximise revenue, whilst football is reduced to an acceptable minimum. As soon as the realised that 4th in the league was profiitable, that was it. Always challenging, never winning. Just enough success to keep the punters paying, the sponsors sponsoring and the money coming in. They've chosen to turn their back on proper success and turn themselves into a tourist attraction, nice comfy stadium, nice comfy seats, nice comfy football and nice comfy fans. That transmits through to players. It's like when people look like their dogs, arsenal attracts, creates and turns you into a certain type of player. Highly payed, pampered, entitled, happy to take dressing room selfies and wear ripped tops, skinny jeans and £500 zip up high tops, but never happy to do the dirty stuff or unhappy with another trophyless season. And this has gone on for a decade now, every season a little bit worse and now they've passed through the worm hole. Their star player visibly doesn't give a fuck, because he's in a strop about not being allowed to join man city, the new arsenal. Having taken the piss with 'St Totteringham's Day' for the best part of 20 years, they are on the verge of getting sucked in, chewed up & spat out by spurs.
Last night was hilarious. They were like a kid that's had to leave the local public school because his parents can't pay the fees, and ended up at the local comp. He's had his hair ruffled, had his shoe's nimrod'ed and had his PE kit nicked on his first day. Used to the sanitised, rarified air of the champions league meeting up with the same old friendly corporates every season, having to now slum it in the europa league with edgy strangers. The whole thing was a complete and utter fuck up from start to finish, and shows the complete ignorance of Arsenal, the Met, etc of european football/fan culture. Anybody that knew one iota, knew what koln are about. Ever since the fixtures got published they've been referring to the match as their 'game of the century'. Arsenal should've given them a bigger allocation, and provided some kind of fan park at highbury fields; but were to arrogant and lazy to do so. They've grown ambivalent to the true fan experiance, happy to concentrate on the corporates and commercials. The police shouldn't have allowed them to gather in central london and march about, and they shouldn't have allowed them to march up the front door of the emirates; but are used to the bovine fans that usually turn up at Arsenal, happy to meet gunnersarus and take selfies infront of statues and fearful of getting a banning order if they don't jump when the police tell them. The koln fans hadn't been in europe for nearly 30 years and intended to celebrate it, and they didn't give a fuck, and just like the london riots did the other year, showed the thin blue line to be just that. It also shows the ineffectiveness of stewards.
The fans were the funniest. People who've had 20 years of nice, safe, sedate fandom and think that what happens in the emirates is a true reflection of what goes on. Well, the had a rude awakening last night. Rude enough for a lot to go home pre match, and rude enough for a lot more to go home mid match, because of some boisterous germans. I'm sure they'll be currently be writing letters of complaint to the club about how their match day experience was ruined by the presence of a large number of away fans who had the audacity to 'support' as opposed to 'spectate'. No real violence or threat of violence, but plenty of arsenal fans soiled themselves.
As someone said on twitter, it was the loudest the emirates has been since the building work stopped. As for the local residents . Robert Peston was live tweeting his trauma of the unfolding events from behind his sofa. According to him the germanic hordes were pissing on his doorstep & doing nazi salutes. Again lazy characterisation. As far as i'm aware wild horde koln are known for turning up in good numbers and being apolitical/left leaning, nothing like if dresden rolled up. Their fans once kicked Bernd Lucke, the leader of a right wing political party off a train, but hey robert, don't let facts get in the way of a good emotive story.
