Topic: Cormac Mcarthy - The Road (or anything he has written)

I read The Road about two years ago and not before or since has a book had such an impact on me.  When I read it I cried like a baby and utterly rapt with it.  The complete lack of positivity bar the one small hiatus in the bunker was draining yet I could still not put it down.  What was unsaid far more chilling than any prose.

Incredible book and a must for any lover of literature.

Apologies if a Cormac Mcarthy thread exists but I searched and searched and could not find one.

Remember feeling like I'd been booted in the stomach after finishing it.

Also remember reading it in bath one night. I carried on reading until the water was stone cold when reading the bunker bit. Completely captivated.

Hell of a book.

Couldn't see what all the fuss was about.See also Power Of The Dog.

Great writing, but really, really depressing. Couldn't put it down, but prefer something with a few lighter moments in, this had none.

Don't read blood meridian. You can only take so much rape and plunder and cutting peoples heads off! makes the road seem like mills & boon.

I'm sorry - I did search for a Mcarthy thread but drew a blank - I presume this tells me more about myself than the board.

Delete/merge etc...

I started Blood Meridian BTW - Jesus, got to about 100 pages and gave up.

I will have another go.

I hadn't really thought about the ending being as hopeful until you mentioned it in the other thread. I pictured the future to be just as gloomy as the rest of the book, with nothing to look forward to. I think my glass was at best half empty when I got to that point.

Same, have tried 3 or 4 times, just can't.

I finished it. It was a slog. Not sure it was worth it to be honest.

I enjoyed All the Pretty Horses a lot more.

Ha Ha Ha - yes, yes I am and have read it all.

All The Pretty Horses - I enjoyed this although I feel I should not have - if you see what I mean.  I bloody love his descriptive writing, really places you but the fucking minutiae detail of setting a wolf track!

However when the violence explodes it really explodes.

I also read The Crossing but have saved Cities of the Plain.  I am really keen to see what happens to John Grady Cole and Billy Parham.

has anyone seen the film for All The Pretty Horses?

I am having a second crack at Blood Meridian and really enjoying it.

Again his descriptive writing really places you and I feel this is a more apt description of America at the time.  Very bleak and extremely violent.

Any fucking idea what so ever what the fuck is going on at the end?

My guess is he's taking the fucking piss.

I did mate; probably the grimmest, darkest book I've ever read. Read somewhere that someone was thinking of making it into a film :-/

Yeah - aomeone tried to make it into a film - there is a bit of it on YT somewhere - he gave up iirc.  Just too much, too hard.

By all accounts it is based on lots and lots of factual stuff.

Grim indeed.
