The story of Detroit in 1967 - one month per chapter, describing the riots and slow decline of the city and also the goings on at Motown, in particular the sacking of Florence Ballard.
Sometimes the attempts to link Motown and The Supremes to the wider events in the city is a bit clunky, but it's an ace read all the same. There's a fair bit on John Sinclair and the MC5, but the insights on soul in general, and Motown in particular, are fascinating.
Learning that Tammi Terrell was named after Ernie Terrell the boxer was worth the entrance money itself, for me.
