Re: Album of the year

From the end of year review Under the Arches mentioned the new Weller album. Gave it a whirl last night. Not him at his best is it ? Played the first album straight after, brilliant album - has he done anything better ? (solo)

will check out the Kurt Vile album

I really disagree. Long long road & the cranes are back are some of the best songs he has ever written, which really resonated. I know it is personal opinion, but i really liked the album. The one with boy george is good as well. Such good song writing.

Dont get me wrong the first one is very good, but this was right up there for me.

I am just a common breed

Re: Album of the year

I can't get on with Weller anymore on his albums. I think it's the production.  Doesn't sound right and neither does his voice.. it's weird how he sounds like the old Weller on the ballad of Jimmy McCabe which to me is a great song , but sounds different on other track's.. from being the biggest Weller nut alive to not liking him is a bit mental to me. Up to wake up the nation I own every release from the jam right through.. every 7, 12 inch, ep CD and vinyl.  Every book every vhs every DVD and I've seen him live getting on fifty times.  When I hear the cranes are back I think it's utter shite and sounds awful. Each to their own and all that... .

Re: Album of the year

He’s got a unique voice. Heard him on Gilles Peterson.

Think he went to a school in London that produces musicans. Loyal Carner and Kate Tempest (another of the bretheren?).

As a Dad I like him, he's got a good beat.. smile

Yep, went to Brit School in Croydon which picks up talented kids in South London and pushes them artistically. Claims he was going off the rails before that, had quit school and was getting tested for autism before he got in there. Might be part of his pitch, but like his uniqueness. LP is very cool, one of my faves this year..

The 3rd one on this, at 09:30, is sublime, worth it just for the drummer..

Sorry can't agree
Maybe I'm missing the point but it All sounds very lazy to me
Sounds like free form jazz meets hip hop
Not my cup of tea

ambition beyond ability

Re: Album of the year

Can't like 'em all, I got no time for the Kings of Leon derivative bands like War on Drugs et al.

Re: Album of the year

But this was LP of the year for me, by a long way.

The BRIT school, where so many of these organically occurring entertainers went to school. Let 'em leave, let the dust settle, invest some money on them, develop a persona and pretend that they've been discovered. I know kate tempest has got talent, but the wheels move a lot easier when you've been to brits, goldsmiths & your dad is a big hitting entertainment/media lawyer in that there london.

I quite like old ginger even though it's not my bag

Reminds me a little bit of TinderSticks

Better him than some talentless Cowell creation used to manipulate the buying public out of their hard earned dosh

You are what you repeatedly do. Excellence is not an event - it is a habit.

Shared a house in the late 90s with a lad who was big into these - they definitely grow on you

He was also BIG into these too

Big into his Paul Simon / Graceland too which probably doesn't surprise you

Re: Album of the year

A late entrant to my list (from the end of year review)

Bootsy Collins - World Wide Funk

Seriously fine.

A man may fight for many things. His country, his friends, his principles, the glistening tear on the cheek of a golden child. But personally, I'd mud-wrestle my own mother for a ton of cash, an amusing clock and a sack of French p*rn.
