Topic: The Grass Arena - John Healy

Just finished this, about the life of an alcoholic who became a chess champion. A difficult book to read and quite depressing, from his abusive childhood through his days as a wino on the streets of London. The book seemed to get saturated with his stories on the street, so much so you kind of gave up caring, and the time he found chess was pretty short and seemed a bit rushed. I found him an unlikable character who only really thought of himself and not others, but I suppose that is what alcohol does to you. A good book but I was slightly disappointed.
