It was built that way because it's Sheffield, and we do what we bloody well like. If you don't like it, stay in that there West Yorkshire.
Just done a bit of research and the design (by Ward and Abbishaw of Rothwell) was second choice. First choice, which was ultimately deemed unworkable, was a huge car slingshot. Both ideas commissioned by West Yorkshire philanthropists hell bent on making sure noone had to spend a second longer than necessary in the North Midlands when on their way back from taking money off southerners.
Not a lot of people know that and if you tell them they don't believe you.
