Topic: Green Sun-Kent Anderson

Not exactly a prolific writer Anderson, this is a follow up to Night Dogs from 1996.

Hanson the protagonist has relocated from Portland to Oakland, via some time in Idaho teaching English. He joins the Oakland PD, but works off his own moral code, developed and honed in Vietnam.

The novel is set in 1983 in East Oakland. Racism and prejudice is rife amongst the mainly white police force, but Hanson works his own way, blurring the boundaries between right and wrong, good and evil. He works alone mostly at night, making precarious friendship with local dealers, and streetwise kids.

Like the best writers Anderson makes you feel like you are there, in a different place and a different time.
