Verdy 4 - S-Pulse 1

http://www.verdy.co.jp/img/hot/080518_0595.jpg

Kazumichi Takagi scored a contender for own goal of the season and Hulk grabbed a double as Tokyo Verdy thrashed sorry Shimizu S-Pulse 4-1 in the J. League on Sunday.

Under no real pressure, Takagi inexplicably drove an attempted back pass past horrified goalkeeper Yohei Nishibe from distance to gift Verdy the lead after half an hour at Ajinomoto Stadium.

More woeful defending from S-Pulse allowed Hulk to extend Verdy's lead on the stroke of halftime, the Brazilian collecting a Takuya Honda interception to slot home from a tight angle.

Shimizu's hopes of salvaging something from the game were all but put to bed five minutes after the break when Leandro cut inside Naoaki Aoyama to beat Nishibe with a simple finish.

Leandro then turned provider for Hulk to smash home his second of the game on 76 minutes before an Aoyama shot was deflected past Yoichi Doi by a Verdy defender to give the visitors a late consolation.

"All my players were really up for it today. We had a bit of luck with the first goal but we worked really hard for 90 minutes," said Verdy manager Tetsuji Hashiratani.

"Obviously we want to score as many goals as possible but it would have been nice to keep a clean sheet."

Not sure if anyone saw the reports from the Urawa v Osaka match, but it all went off on the pitch after Osaka sneaked a win and then it went off in the stands.

I take it everybody's in for the Urawa away match on the 17th July?

Up Verdy, Up!!!

We're in the 2nd division if anyone's interested and look to be a pretty average J-2 team at that.

What is it with me and football teams? roll

Re: Tokyo Verdy - J-League

I can't believe we had Hulk playing for us.

Lads are up to 4th in J2, so are play off potential at the minute.

Nearly been outside the top flight as long as Leeds, proper team away from home.

Yamagata away today in a few minutes.

Come on the Real Tokyo!

Just read through this thread again.

10 years of disappointment heaped on top of what you get from Leeds.  I don't know how you remain so chipper.

Re: Tokyo Verdy - J-League

So Verdy who came in 5th in the league beat Omiya who came in 4th in the 1st of 3 rounds of play off matches to the J1 league.

Verdy now play Yokohama FC, who came 3rd, today, to find out who then goes on to plays Nagoya next week who came 3rd from bottom in J1.

And you thought it was hard getting out of the Championship smile

Let's go Verdy - time to get Leeds on their ass!

Re: Tokyo Verdy - J-League

They won in injury time, no, no away days for me.

Next one is away to Jublio, who lost so take Nagoya's place as the J1 team to beat to gain promotion. What a mad promotion system this is, eh?

4th and 5th play each other. Then the winners of that 4th and 5th play off play the 3rd placed to win 3rd spot in J2. And the winners of that 3rd place play off play the 3rd placed from the bottom J1 side.

Verdy gain promotion if they win their third away win, which is the 3rd in J2 against 16th in J1.

Head's spinning, but happy for the men in green..

Re: Tokyo Verdy - J-League

90+7m Douglas Vieira, shame the keeper didn't score as he was up for this one.

Verdy had to win this, no pens, no second leg, the lower team has to beat the higher team, so Japanese it hurts but at least you "earn" promotion...

Re: Tokyo Verdy - J-League

The final game in this complicated decider on the 3rd place promotion to or retention of J1 status.

Verdy have earned the right to be called the 3rd best team in J2 after winning two playoffs away from home in order to earn the right to play 3rd from bottom in the J1, Jubilo Iwata.

The stakes couldn't be higher for Verdy and for a team that dominated for nearly 10 years when the J-League was created. Get J1 status and you can start playing against the likes of Iniesta et al.

Forza Verdy!

Re: Tokyo Verdy - J-League

Just signed Gary White as new Head Coach. English lad who got Hong Kong to the top of the qualifiers of the Asia Cup against North Korea, Mongolia and Taiwan. The press seem to think it's a good signing.

Let's see if we can get him posting on here?
