Topic: Julian Cope

I have done a search but could not find a JC thread.

Anyhoo - lots of his stuff is being re - issued on Vinyl.  Thank fuck.

In particular Peggy Suicide and Jehovahkill.  Both really fucking expensive for original pressings.

So - in short I am very fucking happy.

Re: Julian Cope

Yes - to be fair I saw those but felt he deserved his own thread - so to speak.

But please lump this in the later thread.

Re: Julian Cope

Beautiful Love is one of my favourite songs ever.  Easy top 5 all time trumpet solos on record.

I'd offer you a beer, but I've only got six cans.

Re: Julian Cope

Did anyone do the Syd Arthur Festival last summer?

I had a re listen to the tracks the other week - a lot of stuff I was not overtly aware of - 13th Floor Elevators and Bob Seger for example.

You can have a listen here.

Also has cope being mad over the start of the tracks as well.

Re: Julian Cope

I picked up some Cope 12" singles in an antique shop the other day.

Both with brand new b sides i'd never heard.

The Greatness and Perfection of Love (remix) with pussyface on the flip and Trampoline with Disaster, Mock Turtle, and Warwick the Kingmaker.

Re: Julian Cope

Anyone have any interest in The Modern Antiquarian?

I was unaware of a doc to go with it the BBC did.

I just watched it - he is such an engaging chap - he should be on TV more.  Anyway - it was really interesting.

I interviewed him for one of those "An Evening With" things about three years ago and boned up on all the books, the Modern Antiquarian being the big one. Fascinating stuff. The afternoon and evening I spent with him was memorable to say the least. At one point he said to me "... so I decided to go on the plain and have a word with Odin ...."
I was like, "Er, Odin? Do you mean ..... "
"The Norse god, yeah. Anyway ...."

Re: Julian Cope

Ha ha ha ha - nice one.  I think he's be one of those chaps you'd meet and he would not disappoint.

Is that available to read anywhere - your interview?

I must say - the Modern antiquarian would be a hard book to read up on!  I've just flicked through and found sites near to where I might be for a weekend and what not.  Visited a few much to the wife's consternation.

Re: Julian Cope

My copy of the modern antiquarian is signed by him. He gave a talk at Waterstones in Leeds when it first came out. He's got a lot of presence.

I remember reading an interview with him in which he basically said that’s what he wanted his book to used for.

Re: Julian Cope

It’s what Julian would want. It was something about getting out enjoying these stone circles and having a spliff, I think.

Re: Julian Cope

I think he said it took him 8 years to research and write. He knows a hell of a lot about it all and connects it all to other stuff like etymology and transcendentalism and loads of other stuff that made my head hurt.

We never recorded the interview, unfortunately. Wish we had. It was a laugh walking down to the venue with him in all his Viking/Fighter Pilot/Zodiac Mindwarp get up. A few heads turned, I can tell thee.
