So my choice?? I’ve got sufficient perception to realise that the main fact against me is my beloved football team, so am ready to be shot down. Probably best not then to put up Night at the Opera by Queen.

Been going a while now had a few months to think about my choice…..
Just pick a real favourite to see what everyone thinks. A Soul-funk choice? And potentially encourage cyber-hurt if people don’t like it/them?
Just pick an obscure album to appear mysterious, windswept and interesting?
Pick a safe choice from 1975-85 so that everybody can review it, plus add in their own particular nostalgic memories?

And then there’s the age thing. Going off the OMJ demographic, the halcyon days of picking stuff is early 70s to the mid 80s i.e. when we first discover our musical likes, or delve into slightly older stuff to get the nuggets of real quality. The coming of age years for me would be my teenage years, so from 1976 to 1983.
Already noticed that era being a fruitful source in the few monthss of this album choice malarkey.

For those of that age, it is fascinating that there is a definite trend to stop exploring new artists/music in the millennium. Not a decision that has been deliberately made but just other stuff in life takes over and don’t have the time to explore. A bit like……I’ve heard enough now so can just listen to my favourites.
This is not a definitive thing for 50-65 year olds as I have mates who still excitedly talk about new music and artists. But for myself when I do a pop quiz or listen to stuff, the last 22 years are nowhere near as musically knowledgeable as the previous 22 years. It just isn’t.

Enough waffling then.
Decided to take a small risk and pick and album away from the early 70s to the mid 80s, and pick something that is less than 5 years old.
Not fashionable so no cool points , but I like him cos I like a melody, and a lyric I can relate to….sarcastic eyeballs etc.

Gerry Cinnamon is a strange one. At 58 years old I’m not a fanboy of his, but:
He writes catchy acoustic-based songs that are easy to sing along to.
He sells out arenas and stadiums very quickly, and his shows are engaging and passionately discussed.
He is not a product of big music industry backing, so should provide some authenticity.
His lyrics are relatively relatable, and he cites Dylan as an influence.

Yet….he’s not really in the mainstream and most people over 40 could probably only name a song or two by him (Belter?)
So here it is my choice for this week…do your worst…..Erratic Cinematic by Gerry Cinnamon.
