Two reasons really. It's one of those 'a time and place' records, and it's just a really good pop song.

Greenwich, summer of 1993. The girl I was seeing lived in an attic room and we' at that stage of the relationship where it's weekends full of sex, music and pubs. Heading out middayish for some bait up Royal Hill and all the pastel painted houses and the sun cracking the flags. It feels like we're on holiday and that line sticks in my head - "It's a fine day, people open windows, they leave their houses just for a short walk" - and it's been there ever since. Happy days.

But it's also a great pop song. Written by Edward Barton, strange cove. Wonder what he's up to these days? Saw him supporting James in about 1990 and remember this bearded man-child on stage strumming his guitar with a carrot. Audience laughing, but slightly nervously. I love that line in the Jane version, 'rain or appointments or something'. Pathos.

Pete Waterman (interesting fella) hears the Jane version whilst driving, pulls over immediately and decides he has to record this song. So it's a slightly cheesy, tinny rave pop sound, and the avant-garde police are getting twitchy as someone posts a PWL track, but to be honest I love both versions.
