It was a Sunday. The 13th of September 1980 apparently. It was Day 2 of the Futurama 2, Keenan's annual extravaganza at the Queen's Hall.

A disused bus depot given over to the occasional event. It was cold, cavernous and devoid of facilities and reeked of piss and patchoulie oil. There was a pool of of urine, possibly several feet deep at one end and a mountain of empty beer cans, both accumulated over almost 2 day's of drinking.

Sunday afternoon had passed pleasantly enough apart from a tete a tete with the Tetley bittermen in the Adelphi and a hail of cans aimed at Mick Hucknall, then of the Frantic Elevators - the Leeds crowd could spot a twat a mile off! There was a mix of the absurd, the unlistenable, the future classics and the downright odd. Some 20 something bands culminating in the glorious return of Gary Glitter, this obviously before anyone knew he was a dirty old Paed.

About three quarters of the way through the lineup the stage was darkened before illuminating 3 figures. To a sparse sound of bass and Hammond organ a solitary female voice cut through the cig smoke and Patchoulie. It was sweet as, slightly off key and purely innocent. This was the Young Marble Giants. Two guys and a girl, Phillip and Stuart Moxham and Alison Statton, hailing from welsh Wales.

The songs (and they were songs) were all well under 3 minutes, most around 2 minutes or less. But that was enough to get you hooked on their hooks. These are tunes that I can still hum today, they still bring a shiver to my spine and a tear to my eye.

Opening with the wonderful 'Searching for Mr Right' there are 15 tracks of further wonderfulness to worm your ear. Eating Noddemix, Credit in the Straight World, Colossal Youth, Constantly Changing... More hooks than a fleet of chinese tuna fishermen. If you're not humming or singing any of these by the end then you're no longer alive.
