Tonight on BBC 4. Think there's a load of people covering his songs in the first programme which might be shit but documentary on him after might be good.

A musician I've not got into yet, even though he is mentioned as somebody who has influenced some of the people I like. Will record this, thanks for the heads up.Any starting point of his you'd suggest?

'Way To Blue' - is good starter. Best tracks from 4 albums.

I never felt magic crazy as thisI never saw moons knew the meaning of the seaI never held emotion in the palm of my handOr felt sweet breezes in the top of a treeBut now you're hereBrighten my northern sky.

Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth, And spotted the perils beneath,All the toffees I chewed, And the sweet sticky food,Oh, I wish I'd looked after me teeth.

cheers for that, I'll be taping the documentary then, and I'll be un-taping the other stuff probably. I've known sweet fa about Mr Drake for years, same with the Buckleys - were they never mentioned on mainstream TV during the 80s and 90s or something?

Yeah its only been the last 10 years or so that the mainstream have caught on. Couldn't get arrested when he was alive which bothered him a lot. The biography by Patrick Humphries is really good and well written. Interesting character, just way too fragile psychologically and painfully, almost autistically shy. Playing live ended up being just too traumatic for him. 5 leaves left or one of the compilations is a good place to start. Or even Pink Moon which is my favourite - no orchestral nonsense just fantastic acoustic guitar and strange, stark lyrics and plaintive, calming voice. The story of how it came about is quite interesting. People had kind of given up on him as he seemed lost in his depression. He turned up at the producers out the blue and said, I want to make another album. Recorded it in a few days then dropped off the tape at Island records, like.. 'here ya - see ya'. Beautiful albumI think there's a few shack fans on here isn't there? Think you can hear the infuence in some of their music.

I have only got five leaves left. I have thought about pink moom. You might have persuaded me. I think his acoustic guitar work is brilliant. If you like him bu Bert Jansch Rosemary Lane. really good.

One of the best love songs ever written. He lived next to a mate of mine. Never met him (dead before I moved down here) but met his Mum a couple of times.

If it's Been mentioned on mainstream TV OC it's usually crap in my humble opioion Nick Drake's music is Real a rollercoaster ride of emotions Honest ,Beautiful & frightning ,Depressing & uplifting It doesn't really get much better ,It's a "tapastry of delights" musically I think he only played 4 gigs but he just culdn't do it live stuck other musicians on stage with him to detract attention from him He hardly sold a record when he was alive all the albums flopped badly Now there worth £500 each ,Just wish i hadn't sold mine in favour of the box set with the extra album in Fruit Tree is quite prophetic .I bought the Humphries book but never read it I don't really see how anyone could write a decent book on Drake unless he knew him ? because apart from His family & Joe Boyd he seems to have had little contact with the outside world so the same would aply to the doc afterwards any way tune in ,drop down & enjoy watch with no distractions

Nick Drake, his career can be paraphrased into: I'm posh, I'm nobody. I'm posh, I'm depressed. I'm dead, I'm famous.

I actually find a lot of his stuff quite uplifting. He's too easily pigeon-holed as 'depressing', which is annoying.I saw the doc a few years ago on the big screen. It's good, but as SA mentions re the book, biographers only really have scraps to work with. His sister Gabrielle (Crossroads) is interviewed in it, as I recall.

Ironic. He got depressed because he was always referred to as "Gabrielle Drakes brother", and since his death she's been "Nick Drake's sister".

There’s no getting away from it Nick Drake was a very vulnerable Melancholic individual Being posh didn’t save him from that. Mental illness is not class focused But he left a wonderful musical legacy .People get embroiled in some of the great literature ,but I put Drake in the same category .I don’t think there’s any other musician for me that captures the depth or the range of emotions like he does. It’s tangible in every piece of music he wrote .It can take you to the highest highs one minute then your in the gutter the next I’m just wondering if he was miss diagnosed? ,this sounds like typical Bi polar behaviour Did any one watch the tribute last night ? I taped it watched the 1st 3 songs & the last half hour I’ll catch the rest later .I thought they murdered the 1st song with the 3 singers [can’t remember what it was now ?Thought it was a good version of “Poor Boy” except the end part when they went over board with the gui tars ..last hour hour was good as well
