I was in Bar Bruno at lunchtime, which is one of the last remaining decent Italian caffs in Soho, London. It's on Wardour Street, down near where the Intrepid Fox used to be. Anyway, couple of guys sat next to me, one from Yorkshire. He asked for a chip butty. Most of the staff are London-Italians, but the guy working the tables was Italian-Italian, from the south, I think. He couldn't understand a word the Yorkshire guy was saying. "Chick bottom?" "Eh? Chip butty. In a white bun, please." "What, please? Cheap button?" This went on for a while longer, then the Italian exclaimed "Oh, OK! Yes, yes!" Turned around to the counter and said "he wants a ciabatta." He then turned around to the Yorkshireman. "Ciabatta, yes?" "Yes, you've got it. Chip butty. White bun." I was in fits. Eventually he got what he wanted, chips in a toasted ciabatta. Looked really bloody tasty, actually.
