Sardine-Tree Not sure I agree with you saying he was taking the piss out of old school racism. While I'm pretty sure he was not a racist in NF/Enoch Powell stylee, his humour back in the day espoused many things that would be considered racist today (to be fair it was racist then but so was society as whole), innocent or benign it may have been at the time. Given he was born an army brat in India and says his best days were those in the army he would find it hard to go against the racist grain of the society he was brought up in. While his racism was part of his humour and was not an evil vindictive type there can be no doubting much of his work was racist or certainly what would be considered racist today. Read Puckoon or his war biographies for evidence of this. Or rewatch the Q series, or the Pakistani dalek sketch (hilarious by the way), tell me how many times in his work he has been guilty or 'black face'. Certainly he ripped the piss out of the establishment, especially those who were responsible for sending him to war and suffering the PTSD and depression he struggled with for all of his life post war. I love Spike, but he was a product of his time.
