Solar Panels

Placid

So enrgy bills on the rise, seas are rising the ice caps are melting. Anyone gone down the Solar route. I understand there are two options Solar heated water and Photvaic which genreates electricity and feeds back into the National Grid.

Just reading that now. Good shout.

Solar power sounds great. Just wonder how long it will be before the government slams a tax on it

Placid

Not that great, although is if you've got £12k sat about. which sadly is not me.

Can buy outright which allows you to trim money off your electric bills and sell back to the grid. Which should se the cost covered after 13 years.

or

Get them installed for free which sees you save £70 a year and the company who installs them makes the momey on selling it back to the grid.

Better start saving then.

heyho

There's a few being installed around us (Rothwell/Woodlesford area). Same company used. Apparenlty 'free'. Wife for the first time ever decided to be decisive and register with them!!! Not heard a thing back.

First house that had it done had to have them moved after some chavs from the local council estate came and bricked them.

When we were looking at do-ing the house up, we looked at sustainable. Solar isn't there yet. A combination of a domestic wind turbine (there are some really good nordic designed jobs) if you live in a place with predictable wind and a geothermal heat pump - looked like they'd do the job of eliminating you're fuel bills. Trouble is its north of 20k investment

Placid.....i've got a mate in horsforth who does this....drop me a pm with your details in you want me to get himto give you a bell and have a chat about it

12k sounds a lot of money.

You can buy the stuff off the shelf over here, it can't be that difficult to install, if you are that way inclined. I reckon you could get a full kit for one panel for under 3000euro here, I suspect it's the selling the extra back to the National Grid that costs, that must take some doing wiring up to the NG. Just get a load of christmas lights on the house every december and use up the excess.

Burn the chavs, there must be a deal of blubbery energy awaiting release under the nylon shell suits.

Prices have definitely come down over the last 6 or 7 years due to competition and mass production- some of the prices we were quoted when we first came over here were extortionate - 18,000 euros - having said that, that was about £12000 in those days. They reckoned you'd pay it off in about 10 years, and running it back into the grid was basically just through meter but the other way (folk used to just switch their wiring round on the meter for free leccy til the companies got wise). Iberdrola would only buy it all off you and then sell you it back at a 10% premium and would not deal any other way. I'd be surprised if that hasn't changed now.

Having said that there's tones of solar and wind over here now. Made fuck all difference to the price though - everytime oil or gas goes up so does the leccy. And never comes back down.

Reggie_Perrin

Had jonny solar fitted about a month ago with a 15kwh Anker battery system. Am addicted to checking the App for what money we aren't spending anymore on leccy. Investment for retirement.

What did it cost to install though and how many years before you break even?
That’s what put us off as we’re looking to downsize in the not too distant future,

Reggie_Perrin

Raposa yeah no point if you are looking to downsize. I'm ok with the outlay as the aim is to reduce outgoings vs income from pensions eventually.
