king_of_the_slums RIP Russ Solomon, 92, the founder of Tower Records and a true original... In 1999, Tower Records peaked with $1 billion in annual sales. However, the company over-expanded in an era where big box retailers encroached and digital file-sharing programs like Napster emerged. Five years later, Tower Records would file for bankruptcy, although Solomon at that point had moved into a board position with the company. Tower Records ultimately went out of business in 2006. Following a liquidation of Tower's assets, Solomon emailed his employees, "The fat lady has sung….She was off-key. Thank you, Thank you, Thank You."https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p-cyAbhOJII
CharlieG CBIT wroteNME - read it religiously in the 80sFrom, about, 1972 to mid 80's. At one point I had about 10 years worth stashed in the loft. Wonder what they'd be worth.......
Mitaman Didn't he get done for tax evasion once? Seemed to be a very big deal at the time I think? but in actuality in the scheme of things today, its hardly front page news. Always enjoyed his daft shows as a kid, RIP.
Harvest Saw him in Blackpool as a kid. He did this bit where everyone was shouted out their favourite football teams at the same time. I was screaming 'LEEDS UNITED!!!' and he looked up at where I was sitting, 'United? That's a chocolate biscuit isn't it?'
Travis_Bickle Fucking hilarious at times. Watched him once on some BBC show when daytime telly first started. Cried with laughter throughout.
space That's quite a CV.
Sir Kenneth Arthur Dodd, OBE (8 November 1927 – 11 March 2018)[1] was an English comedian, singer-songwriter and actor, identified by his unruly hair and protruding teeth, his red, white and blue "tickling stick" and his upbeat greeting of "How tickled I am!" He also created the characters of the Diddy Men ("diddy" being an informal British word for "small").Dodd worked mainly in the music hall tradition, although he occasionally appeared in dramatic roles, including Malvolio in William Shakespeare's Twelfth Night on stage in Liverpool in 1971; on television in the cameo role of 'The Tollmaster' in the 1987 Doctor Who story Delta and the Bannermen; and as Yorick (in silent flashback) in Kenneth Branagh's film version of Shakespeare's Hamlet in 1996. In the 1960s his fame in the UK was such that he rivalled the Beatles as a household name, with his recording of "Tears" being the UK's third-best-selling single of the 1960s. His records have sold millions worldwide.[2]He was knighted in the 2017 New Year Honours for services to entertainment and charity.[3]He continued to tour the UK in 2018 with The Ken Dodd Happiness Show before pulling out of his tour due to health issues.[4]
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Dodd
