Death List 2026

Travis_Bickle

Sara Townsend. One of the Lawnswood School massive, '82-'87. She was pretty and funny and fucking loud. More front than a row of houses. She had her demons in life but she had poetry in her soul. So many fucking, fucking wastes of fucking oxygen will live to their 90s and Sara won't. Brings home how we move on and drift away. Last saw her at a school reunion and she was one of those you were so fucking glad you saw again.
Don't you fucking dare rest in peace, rage hard love.

Djpekingman

90Piesanhour Blimey? He was 91!!! Brave brave man in an era of disintegrating Stalinesque soviet government. Loved and hated by the chinese government - loved for bringing down the soviet union, hated for bringin down the soviet union. Indirectly freed the legions of polish plumbers, romanian sparkies, bulgarian builders and Albanian people traffickers and pimps.

Foxy_Dread

Can any of the subsequent state failings be pinned on him? I have absolutely no idea but it would be relevant in his final P+L account

Djpekingman

Foxy_Dread I think not. He was sidelined and removed from politics when Yeltsin came along. Now if you were to ask the same question of Yeltsin, then my answer would be an unreserved yes!

90Piesanhour

Djpekingman I should have said; 'Blimey, I thought he died years ago!'

Foxy_Dread

Djpekingman could he have seized the initiative and put things in place. Not hard to be proactive when the narrative for shit communism is that the middle classes melted into the background and joined the party

Foxy_Dread

"Things" should read "constitutional safeguards". Fucking auto correct.

Djpekingman

Foxy_Dread I'm not sure he had that much power. The polit bureau supported him while they saw an opportunity to make a killing, and as soon as they got that he was dropped like the proverbial hot potato. The relationship between Gorby and Yeltsin is interesting. Yeltsin wanted to go further and faster then Gorby who tried to keep some level of a lid on it all. Again polit bureau to Yeltsin's rescue as he was easier to manipulate and they could get away with murder (Couple of bottles of Stolly and bob's yer uncle).

Kevin_Stapleton

Foxy_Dread Just been on Google Translate - it seems the words 'constitutional safeguards' don't exist in Russian.

Foxy_Dread

Kevin_Stapleton yeah fair point, I don't know how much power he had. He must have been in a strong position to take the path he did, could he have done more?

Flaneur

Foxy_Dread He did more than any of us in his position could have hoped to do. Judge the man at the time, not retrospectively.

When people said to Ice T, upon viewing his old videos "What you doing wearing them clothes?" He said "WHAT THE FUCK WERE YOU WEARING AT THAT TIME?".

Think on.

Foxy_Dread

Flaneur i'm open on this no entrenched view and I won't be doing the homework to develop one.

Ed Miliband democratises the Labour Party, we end up with Corbyn. Miliband fucked up.

Do we absolve Thatcher of all blame today because council house sails were of there time and the shit afterwards was in the future.

Flaneur

No, on the whole she was a cunt.

Reggie_Perrin

Flaneur definitely not. The sale of council housing and privatisation of utilities led to so much damage it can never be rubbed out.

Anchor

Bill Turnbill - big C

Reggie_Perrin

Anchor poor old Bill. I'm still warming to Charlie, Dan Walker is just awful.

Mega_Armageddon_Chickens

Hard punching Heavyweight Earnie Shavers. A man who knocked Larry Holmes down and stopped boxing's very own conscientious objector Joe Bugner when few could.
Fought most others of note in the 70s as well including a world title shot v Ali.

Reggie_Perrin

Mega_Armageddon_Chickens he could bang could Earnie. RIP

Under-the-ground

Jesus. Would be like walking into a truck
