Shocked by this. Not listened to a single note of his music since the Leeds thing. Before that though they and him were such an influence in my young life - I was a little rude boy with a Fred Perry, Harrington, braces, all of that. He was a troubled man, I worked with his cousin and heard some worrying things. Blanked him out for years but feels odd that he's gone.

Fuck no. I was able to forgive his anti Leeds shit, but he was a lyrical and melodic genius. Last saw him on the Specials 40th anniversary tour when they toured the new album in Brussels. They were as good as I ever remembered. The updated version of Lunatics was more relevant then than ever. RIP Tel. You were one the most important parts of my youth.

Genuine apathy for this news. Since that comment, I felt let down by someone I liked. I dont or didnt hate him, just not interested in him. Yes I love their music and it influenced me at the time and afterwards.

His depression and use of prescription drugs probably explains his demanour all these years.

What a shocker, unique singer, performer and the early Specials stuff and iconic first album were a big thing in teenage years. His Leeds comments ruined him for me after that, still a shame he's gone, RIP

Leeds comments aside, … he was the voice of the soundtrack of our youth . Him and the Specials … inspired a whole generation … were at the forefront of anti racism, of multiculturalism, spoke out against Thatcher , showed that working class kids could have a voice, be successful … for that and the most fucking excellent records he made this is a truly sad loss. * Puts on Too Much Too Young *

YoungParisian_inExile The Specials may have taken up the mantle on Anti Racism but they weren't the movement, Rock Against Racism as we all know was established and successful before the Specials came to prominence.
