pipoldchap wroteYes, it was Alvin (real name Bernard Jewry) and he successfully took the stage name Shane Fenton. He was doing rock 'n roll revival gigs in the early 70s still as Shane Fenton until Pete Shelley of Magnet Records persuaded him to cut MY COO-CA-CHOO as Alvin Stardust and it went to number one. However, I didn't know that there had been a real Shane Fenton before him.
Johnny Theakstone was the original. Bernard was a roadie for them at the time. They were Johnny Theakston and the tremeloes. Theakston sent a demo tape to the BBC under the name Shane Fenton and the Fentones and then snuffed it. Tremeloes split up, the Beeb got back to them and the group go back together and asked Bernard to become Shane Fenton. The rest as they say, is history.
