Worked a couple of weeks out in Malawi, Zambia and Tanzania earlier in the year and came back with malaria which was what did for him. RIP fella. Dangerous game this tobacco business. A few of us have been out there recently.
Quite a few (treatment) resistant forms of Pl. falciparum coming out of Africa . Very dangerous business.
All Malaria is potentially fatal. Especially if not caught early. The pills don't work anywhere near 100%, there is no vaccine, the only thing is to dip yourself in repellant, make sure you sleep under a net or avoid Malarial Africa. I was in Lusaka in Zambia in the wet season. I was told it was malaria free. Still I did the pills, and blathered myself in repellant and kept an insecticide tin by my side. Fortunately I only saw 4 mozzies all week and I killed two of those. Now as you say, it's mutating and becoming ever more difficult to treat. Even if you recover you never get rid of it - it will always come back to haunt you. Still the biggest killer in Africa I believe.
