Unfortunately i heard some similar rhetoric at work yesterday from supposedly educated people. Basically:
Them: "That's why gay footballers can't come out"
Me: "What is? What do you mean?"
Them: "You know, people would think that they wanted to fiddle with the young players too"
Me: "Are you f*cking serious? Being gay doesn't mean you're a paedo just as much as being a paedo doesn't make you gay"
Them: "They're all f*cking wierd - you never know"
Me: Shaking head "don't be a dick" walks off promising to never engage in conversation with same bloke ever again
Unfortunately we all know that a lot of this feeling still pervades which is a shame. Good SKY have pulled the plug on him so quickly
