The man had decency enough to remonstrate with the fans who booed John Barnes. Great pundit, insightful.

albert herbert hawkins wroteNot sad about Taylor, they should plough the cunt under and see whether he can fertilise the grass he despised so much as a coach. I don't think he was good. he was just another Charles Hughes POMO wanker that destroyed player production in the UK in 70's and 80's. They only greater travesty than his appointment as England Manager was leaving the hapless cunt in charge after the Euro 92 debacle.
Not a viewpoint i'd personally agree with AHH, but you're more than entitled to it. As a matter of interest, what's your view on Howard Wilkinson and his style of football? Wasn't that POMO? Didn't Leeds score more goals from set pieces than open play the season you won Division 1?
albert_herbert_hawkins
Depends what Barnes was getting booed for. If he was getting booed for being black then well done for stepping in. If however he's getting booed for being an overrated shit cunt then bollocks!

You held back from pointing out that not all club managers make a good job of the transition from club to England. Very tactful :D .

http://thesportjournal.org/article/analysis-of-goal-scoring-patterns-in-the-2012-european-football-championship/Also, this comes from 2012 euro championships. Charles Hughes said three passes was the magic number for scoring a goal. This modern research says 4 or less. Plus most goals scored between goal line and pen spot from crosses from wide areas. Basically POMO.

What's the matter Albert have you had some bad news? You seem a bit grouchy.

Young Marxist at Tescos wroteSome interesting international selections. But you can't blame him for halting player development.
This country has reached the semis of the World Cup twice. One of those was a home-based tournament. We do not regularly produce players capable of coping with the latter stages of major competitions. Never have. Nothing, long-term to do with Taylor
I don't blame him solely but he was one of Hughes leading disciples all of whom have done the game a great disservice in the uk that we are still to recover from.
Smutty_Lips
I don't see how you can make the jump from Hughes to a lack of talent coming through. There are many contributing factors I'd put Hughes well down the list, no, he'd not even be on the list.

Isn't Hughes actually the visionary pioneer/creator of football data analytics? Square 14 and all that? :)

My view on Wilkinson changed whilst he was with us. I was dismayed as I think many were when he sidelined Sheridan. Surprised and reassured by the acquisition of Strachan. And converted by the addition of McAllister. I doubt was alone in that Journey of feelings. McAllisters addition to the other three in midfield confirming we'd be playing football in the top flight not hoofball. This contrasts of course with the Taylor who thought Geoff Thomas was a good bet for England in central midfield.

Anyhow Clare Hollingworth died in Hong Kong last week. As the journalist who reported the the start of world War two as it happened by holding the phone out the window, she's a bit more interesting than the Turnip-meister.

And Carlton Palmer in the midfield as well AHH, don't forget him.

He was labelled a ‘turnip’ by the press, and widely ridiculed in the aftermath of its broadcast, but arguably the most telling moment of the whole program was Taylor’s willingness to jump to the defence of his player John Barnes, as he was booed by a Wembley crowd eager for a scapegoat during a disappointing display against San Marino in 1993.
Turning to an unseen aggressor who shouts a racist comment at Barnes, Taylor says firmly, “Hey, you’re talking about another human being, so just watch your language”, before lamenting the articles that the newspapers had written about Barnes – who suffered racial abuse throughout his career - in the run-up to the game. In the face of a whole stadium’s anger, Taylor stood up for his player.
I can't defend his decision to pick sinton and palmer, but not to pick Waddle & Beardsley, but a lot of Taylor's problems with midfield creativity were caused by Gasciogne's disintegration as a professional athlete. Taylor knew where the real root of his problem lay.
Geoff Thomas is defined by that miss against France, but i seem to remember him from that era as an energetic, decent box to box midfielder, from a decent Palace side. He was player of the season in a team that finished 3rd, so deserved a call up. Same goes for David White. Deserved a call up based on his domestic form, but didn't perform.
He made some strange decisions as England manager, but fuck me he was blighted by bad luck and some bad referring decisions. Wouters doing gascoigne at wembley & then setting up a goal and Koemans sending off/free kick)

Good points. Plus who were the alternatives in 1990?
Wilkinson? Fuck that, ha ha ha. Coppell? Too young at that point and would have crumbled. Jim Smith? Would have killed someone. Kendall? Pissed at the time. Gerry Francis? Shit hair and still at Bristol. Joe Royle? Still at Oldham. Dave Bassett? No. Penry the mild mannered janitor?
The rest were Scottish. Ferguson, Rioch, Dalglish, Campbell, Souness.
No a lot of options about really.

Misura the Palmer reference was there for AHH, I seem to think Howard Wilkinson the converted football purist was fan enough to sign him for Leeds. Others would know more perhaps he was the McAllister replacement.

nah, Batty

Palmer was actually signed by Wilkinson to play centre back after the John Scales deal fell through when he opted for Spurs instead.
Wilkinson might not have been a purist but some of the football we played in that title winning season and in fact the season before was some of the best I suspect many of us have witnessed.
Taylor was a decent coach but seemed out of his depth st international level....and as for Geoff Thomas, shouldn't have got within 100 miles of an international cap but in fairness you could say the same about many more since.

Saw Scales a couple of times for the juniors. Another one we were happy to let go.
