That Bradford game was a bit mad. got a bit, I believe the term is 'on top' then there was a mass of flares ans perms, led by that lad Tommy from Wortley (fuck knows what happened to him but he was sound, big mate of Skizz's and Chris Mc - another one who fucked off abroad young).Never really saw the appeal of a perm to be honest.Kennedy's joke shop, good call. Holgate's sweet shop by the 82 bus stop on the way home. Imagine my excitement when me Mam and Dad bought their house off them? Not sure what I was expecting. A garage full of Yorkshire mixtures? Here's one for you, Polish John's Barbers off Burley Road. Spangle after your hair cut then he's tell my old man about sending stuff back home to his family. I imagined Poland to be a bit like Ethiopia but with white people he made it sound so impoverished.

Fine Fare - Me Mam got all our gear from there. Shirts with paratroopers on and faded bell bottom denims with bumble bees embroidered on them. I unsuccessfully tried to unpick mine.Rothery Radio - An old record shop that had listening booths is where I bought my first record; Tiger Feet by Mud. I'm sure I paid 45p for it (but I may have had an attack of The Sampsons), which I seem to remember confused me at the time because I associated the cost of the record with the number of revs per minute and couldn't work out why LP's would only be 33p but you got got more songs. Ames Records - A small record shop in our town that was staffed by a bunch of librarian look a likes, but they had a top selection of music. there was a woman in there that knew everything about the music that we were into at the time. You'd go in and sing a few words of a song if you didn't know what it was called and she'd pull it out of the rack behind. She never failed. Impressive.Probe. I spent all of my milk round money in there.St John's Market - Aladdin's Cave. There was a fire in the market in the late 70's, but all of the stall holders commandeered a smoke licked corridor and sold baggy and box leathers, Pod, Rider Boots, Kickers etc.Old Swan Army and Navy stores. Throughout it's time it supplied me fisherman knit jumpers, reversible blue/yellow sailing jackets, Mash hats. Teens and Twenties - St John's Market. The greatest Jeans/cords stall in the world. Every pair of jeans you've read about that have been talked about by the Johnny come lately types on the internet were stocked by this stall. Fruit of the Loom, FU's, Jesus, Inega, King cross cords. The lot.Gansgear, Goldrush, downstairs in Top Man , Wade SmithOasis. Proper one offsManchester underground market - Proper cord shoesSpin Inn - 'Party people, party people...' ...and Hurleys of course.Man to Man on Lord Street in Southport used to stock some nice Luhta and Melka jackets.

Omega Records, Northwich - owned by the lad who became the manager of The Charlatans. A classic indie record store but without the pretencious know-all staff, well, they came from Northwich... Penny Lane Records, Chester - see above but also offered ticket + coach packages to gigs in Liverpool and Manchester. An umbilical cord to civilisation for us wools. Cafe Society, Chester - Uber arty clothes shop, bought some shockingly hideous stuff from there. Ames Records, Chester - Not as good as Omega/Penny Lane in terms of indie 12" singles but stocked a wider range of music related gear...posters, books, 2Tone badges etc. Bought a Joy Division book there which made me think I was the official walking bible on the band. I was, in fact, a 15 year old idiot.
