Good read that , top effort. p.s if you're writing a lot do it in notes and cut and paste - too easy to lose a bunch of writing if you type it directly !

Great stuff LBB, shagged out just reading it.

I've been thinking about that 30% section this morning. I think the steepest I've done was a section on the Etape that hit 23-5% apparently. I reckon when you get as steep as that technique comes into it. What gear were you running at the back LBB? The MTB lot I know that did it nearly all had 12-30 or 12-32 and reckoned that got them over. Pro Cycling magazine did a piece about the steepest gradient you could theoretically ride up. Think they said 40-something % from memory but you have to start worrying about tyre compounds and bike design.

When it gets that steep the head angle and geometry become important according to that article. And where your weight is on the bike. The triple will have helped a lot. I had a 12-28 with a compact for the Etape and was out of the saddle and stomping on the pedals on the really steep bits, not the way I like riding as I'm tall with bad knees.Must have a crack at Shibden Wall. It's in the 100 Great Climbs book.

I'll ride down it on one.....First 'proper' ride on the new bike tomorrow. Free pass for the day. Good weather forecast and trails round here are nice and dry I'm told. Get in.

Looks mint. Must get out soon, Denshaw?

Always wanted a 5, the 29er version gets mixed reviews. I nearly went for the Gyro (their first full-sus 29er) but people persuaded me to go 27.5. Best of both worlds.Just let me know when you're free. Out next Sunday with one of the Saddleworth mob. Might do Gisburn or some Hebden stuff. More than welcome to join us.Out early tomorrow. Solo job up the valley

First proper ride on the new bike. Decided not to lock the rear shock out to get an idea of how it rides etc. Have slung a leg over full-sus bikes before but never owned one (20 years too late, story of my life) so all a bit new.Riding on the road to Brighouse to get to the canal and it wasn't really any different from the Clockwork. Slower, it was bound to be, but not by a huge amount. The canal was a blast, get warmed up for the climb in Copley Woods. The bike doesn't climb as quick as a hardtail but it was way more comfortable. And in some ways the suspension helps. The bike seems to roll over obstacles that can send you offline and interrupt your pedalling. This kind of smoothed them. Anyway, been a few weeks since I've been out so I wasn't going to hit any KOMs. The fun started on the downhill. Amazing how much of the trail the bike deals with. The old bike would send me all over of I hit a root or a stone etc. It's not just the suspension that smooths it. The 'maxle' screw-through axles front and rear mean the bike is super stiff and holds its line much better. Still getting used to how it actually rides so wasn't going crazy but got my fastest time ever on the second half of the downhill. I decided I wanted to get a proper ride in so rode to Hebden to climbed Horsehold Lane. Fucking steep and whilst I had a couple of stops I thought about LBB's post about Hardknott and didn't push. Good advice. You notice the suspension when you're riding a flat section of trail. Hardtails make sure you feel every bump, hollow and the like. This just eats them up.Caught the Mary Townley and went to Stoodley Pike. More climbing. Sit at the Pike and take in the view, beautiful up there. Across the rock pavement at the top. Almost impossible to ride all of it. Pedal-strikes all over. And then the drop into Withens Reservoir. One of my favourite spots. Never any bugger there. Back down to the canal and then the ride home.Just under 40 miles, 650m climbed. Nice that something good comes out of something shit like the burglary. Going to be a good summer.......
