it’s gone from a working class sport into an aspirational one.You should see it round here. As I'm sure you're well aware New Jersey has some seriously minted people as well as some of the poorest Americans. I just laugh at those who spend big bucks on a bike. Like I said above, why pay all that for an off the peg bike when you can get one custom made by someone who knows what they're doing, like the blokes at Bob Jackson for instance for a lot less. You'd still spend a couple of grand, and that's beyond me, but it would last a life time and be a better/healthier fit.I laugh at blokes who are overweight fretting about the grams they could shave off their bike if they upgraded their pedals. Skip a cheese burger if you want to make a difference. My bike cost $800s, which I think is pretty pricey but then again my first decent bike cost two weeks wages when I was 17 so I guess it's actually cheaper in real terms. I'd agree with the article. Expect it to get turned up a notch or two more after the Tour starts in Yorkshire.Like everything, it'll pass. Just as treadmills become clothes horses, there'll be a lot of great bikes left at the back of garages in a few years time.

Agree with that re: cheeseburgers. My mate's bike costs three times more than mine, but he was the one getting off to push when we got to a hill cos he's 5 stone heavier.

I bet they all reckon they saw the Pistols at the 100 club as well, not like all the real deal.R&R

The 150 euro Legnano 70s classic I bought, well I absolutely love it, and it´s with me until one of us perishes.I´ll upgraded as and when needed and that´s that.

I know Cuts is on Eggbeaters. YMAT, SPDs or SPD-SLs, any real difference? If I use SPDs I can share shoes between the MTB and the road job. Some reckon you can get pain in the sole of the foot with them on road bikes. Load of bollocks or something to think about?
Young_Marxist_at_Tescos
SPDs on two of me bikes and LOOK on the Scott.Never had a minute's bother with either and the SPDs are easier to get in and out of.

My old gaffer has SPDs, did the Land's End to John o' Groats ride in 9 1/2 days at 60. Had his bike built by Brian Rourke, the old man fitted him, consulted and money was no object. I still get pins and needles on lengthy rides occasionally even though I think I've got everything comfy. Guess I'll keep on experimenting. I got the Egg Beaters because they were cheap and shed mud easy. Think a lot is person preference.I use Contis my mate uses Armadillos both of us think we have great tires.

Great ride today. Another 100k'er, with a day off of work. Started from Witney in Oxfordshire and went all around the Cotswolds. Absolutely stunning weather in the bright sunshine, which was bloody hot. The people I had tagged on to we're stopping every 15k for water refills! And you blinking needed it, apparently it was 31 degrees. The scenery was absolutely immense all Cotswold stone villages that all the Americans go gaga over, together with rolling hills and even a ford crossing! At the finish there were cakes galore, showers, a wide screen with the Tour de France on tea, sangers and squash. All for 7squid. A great day. I am starting to sound like that bloke from the fast show, which was nice.

Great post UTA.Off for my first proper ride out on the 'racer' on Saturday. Really looking forward to it. Reckon we'll ride up the valley and then have a crack at Cragg Vale. Lad I'm riding with has done it in under 17 minutes, add an hour and I'm there....

UTA, love reading your posts bout your cycle marathons. Good work fella.

Agree. That's bloody hot too. How many other riders were there?

About 50 in total. Real nice mix again. Mostly retired types. I said to this couple (real strong riders)"this is better than working", she said "whats work!". It took me 6hrs which is slow, but in that heat you couldnt of fired around. I will deffo do this one again, probably the nicest ride I have done. Not too many killer hills either and my legs felt good afterwards.my confidence has taken a bit of a jump & I feel ready to break my 100mile duck in 3weeks, then the 200k the month after that.

After the 'hill intervals' came the first 'proper' ride.Fantastic trip out. Just under 30 miles including the Cragg Vale climb. I was out with a couple of 'elite' riders who were kind enough to stick to my pace and give me loads of really helpful tips on technique and form etc. Sorted my descending on tarmac. Sounds daft but I reckon today's ride really turned a corner. Riding back into Ripponden after the CV climb we were going like stink and I was chatting away. Good feeling. Even managed some sprints to copy what I do on the spin bike.Great to ride with people that are better than you and their encouragement got me up the hill out of Sowerby Bridge back into Halifax. Cracking day. Still grinning now....

Any of you mountain bike boys got aero bars (them gay things that the triathlon boys use) on a mountain bike. I was considering of changing my hybrid to drops, but it will cost big bucks due to the disc breaks & gear changers. I wont get much change out of £300 (which I haven't got!)So I have being doing a bit of reading into aero bars on my hybrid, as some people do it and mountain bikers have them for going downhill (apparently). I aint looking to go any faster I am just looking for a few more hand positions on longer rides for comfort. I am thinking that this might give me the option of getting down out of the wind, and for when you are knackered. Also I don't find hybrid bars as comfortable as drops, even with bar ends! Any help would be appreciated.

Never seen anyone with TT bars on a Mtb on the trails. On One and Jones do some weird and wonderfully shaped bars that allow different hand positions Think Ragley might as well.

http://www.manxmtb.com/home/articles/406-manx-100.html This looks a pig of an event.I´m off cycling in the IOM in a couple of weeks, gentle trails off road on a mtb, i´ve just bought one of the Beinn 29ers that islabikes do, Travis tipped it up a bit back. Bit of an impulse buy. I´m getting it delivered over there so could all go wrong if there is a delay.

I think the problem with TT bars is steering. A lot of the explorer bikes from Salsa and the like use bars that are halfway between drops and flats.I'd be careful about clamping something on risers, not sure whether they'd take it.
