I take it you´ve never heard Fiery Jack from Totale´s Turns. They were good, and he was the sharpest knife in the drawer.

He was the Peter Kay of his generation...pithy social commentary with a humorous edge

I only got into them after Kicker Conspiracy,. They were playing Container Drivers in Jumbo, I thought it was brilliant and still do. I'm a Hex Education and This Nation's man myself - more accessible and who doesn't love two drummers?
Foxy_Dread
Hex Enduction yes, but This Nation´s Saving Grace marked the end of the golden years.A lot of the stuff on TNSG and after it is very good, but their very best stuff predated it.

Listen to Dragnet and it is so far removed from other stuff of the time, it´s a massive direction change for the bands of the time, lo fi pop, with great lyrics.

Writes some marvellous stuff, just a shame that he doesn't get someone else to sing it. He's a bit dronie isn't he?

Each to their own. I liked the less edgy stuff. I could never make out the words really. I liked stuff like How I wrote elasticman and Pel played them loads but the Kicker Conspiracy double single was the first thing I bought. I usually put Masquerade in playlists these days. Did some great cover versions too.

Nowadays yes his voice has gone but I´d argue that years ago he was one of the great non singers up there with Max Bygraves, Telly Savalas, Bob Dylan etc.

Never a big fan. Old man likes him. Still catch him saying 'it was the fault-ah of the government-ah'

My old man's take on Dylan - he's not really singing, he's not really talking and at times it's pretty good. Not sure about old Mx or Kojak. On Mark E Smith - what's this shit you're listening to?

I'm the first lawyer in the family.edited to add a bit of family history that shows how the world has changed. He was bright, seriously bright. He puts me to shame, cleverest guy I've ever met, sharp, sharp mind. I'm his son so I'm biased but he'd have been a fucking deadly brief. Wanted to read law. He'd got a scholarship (one of 8, born dirt poor in Boro, we'd take the piss but the stories he tells make you realise what living under the 'poverty line' is actually like).Anyway, wanted to be a lawyer. Got an offer to read law at Durham. Even the masters who helped him, bought books etc told him 'not for you chum, not your sort'. Add to that back then you had to 'buy in' to a chambers. They couldn't buy enough food.He never read law. Went to Leeds instead.I remember how proud he was when I got called to the Bar. He'd been like my personal researcher at Uni, he'd have walked a 2:1 just from reading along with my course. Now I work with people from every walk of life, every colour, creed, background etc.

Hit The North probably my favourite Fall song.
