Finally getting through boxes of my Dad’s old photos from his time working as a presenter / DJ on #radio270 which was a pirate radio station in the 60s run out of Scarborough & for a period, Bridlington. My Dad joined the station as he worked for the owner, a local supermarket magnate, who in turn wanted a lad with a “local accent” on the DJ team. Dad cut his teeth by reading the news and then wound up with his own show on the graveyard shift as a DJ. Probably the best slot for a 18 year old Mod to be on, as he got to play music he liked and got a following of like minded people who had a habit of staying up after midnight. Before this, my Dad studied Advertising Photography at Hull University, but dropped out in the 2nd year as he didn’t have enough money to stay on the course. It appears that he took a lot of photos of the equipment, daily life on the ship (Oceaan 7) and some of the ship’s crew. Which I've started to digitalise for a supporters group (webpage and FB group) for the 60s pirate radio scene.
Miss you Dad, too cool for school, always! x

DJ in full flow (not Dad)

Two of the ship's crew - my Dad made mates with the crew more than the experienced DJs who were all flown in from all over the UK and US. Paul Burnett, and a load of mid-western presenters. The crew in turn looked after him as he wasn't a flash harry type and just a local nipper, he boarded and ate with them.
