Watched 'A call to spy' last night. Based on real life (dont know how much is fabrication) it is about Britain sending female spies into France in WWII.

The people depicted it are all real life - Vera Atkins recruits two candidates, Virginia Hall an American with a wooden leg, and Noor Inayat Khan a Muslim pacifist.

Worth a punt. Not quite edge of seat gripping stuff though

I've just finished reading a biography of Virginia Hall. She survived three years behind enemy lines and was the most successful WWII agent of all. Fascinating woman. As was Vera Atkins of the SOE. Noor Inayat Khan was a real life Indian Princess and devout Sufi. I've got a line of books cued up on all of them.

space You always wonder how much is poetic licence in films like this so I suppose the lack of any real James Bond type swash buckling action makes you get a more realistic idea of what things were like. They certainly had balls (or whatever the female equivalent is).

heyho Her skills were in recruitment, organisation and disguise. And she had a knack for knowing when to cut people loose and run. At a time when most agents were captured within days and the rest lucky to last three months she spent the best part of three years in France. Amazing achievement.

Harvest

Not right now but last night, the three of us watched one of the greatest films ever. About my 10th viewing, the lad's 2nd, wife's never seen it. 'The Man Who Would Be King'. It's just a fantastic film, the scenery, the dialogue, the narrative, the acting, everything.
'Hats on. About turn.'

The Anderson Tapes, a post Bond Sean Connery and a really young Christopher Walken making his feature film debut. Apparently the first major film to focus on the pervasiveness of electronic surveillance, from security cameras in public places to hidden recording devices. Filled a couple hours and on Sony Movies Classics so no doubt will be repeated multiple times.

The Beach with Leonardo de Caprio. I quite enjoyed it when I first saw it.
