Its stalemate right now. I think its waiting for someone to come in and grab both sides and agree a compromise. From the little I know the eastern Ukraine is made up of majority Russian speaking people.

Putin’s objective is to stay in power the military objectives are to ensure they have a warm weather port. Russia’s only one is Sebastapol which they had to annexe from Ukraine.

I read a book about it (Power of Geography - Tim Marshall) suprising how many global conflicts come from the need to access global ports for trade. That and the need go transport oil and gas to the biggest consumers (Europe and China).

The best thing for Ukraine and Russia’s economy and people is peace and bilateral trade. However, thats not the motivation for Putin. He’s the main protagnoist and he just wants division and chaos so he can stay in power at home.

Placid It's crossed a lot of lines that Putin has laid down. It's fairly obvious that it's Ukrainian troops involved, not just the Russian legions. Also looks like NATO equipment is present. Also looks like NATO long range weapons now being used against targets in Russia.

An interesting demographic that I read yesterday is from the analysis of Russian obituaries it has been gleaned that the average age of a deceased soldier was 30 years old at the beginning of the war but is now 38 years old. They're maintaining numbers but their recruits are getting older and have less training and experience than before. These are the numbers that might be more salient than a count of warm bodies.

Ukraine's invasion of Russia and bombing Russian cities can only have had one motive. He must have anticipated Russian retaliation, therefore he wants to escalate the war in the belief it will force NATO / Europe to get involved.

Possibly, related to fears of Trump winning the election.

Foxy_Dread There can be a number of reasons for Ukraine's poking of mother Russia apart from the conspiracy theory you propound.

Fighting the war on russian soil and bringing it home to the russian people with the hope of turning public opinion (if their is such a thing in russia that does not emanate from the Kremlin) against Putin and his war.

Cutting of supply lines to the russian occupied territories in Ukraine

Diversion of russian military from the Ukrainian east to stop Ukraine having a direct run on Moscow

Pissing Putin off

Grabbing a big chunk of land to be used in potential future peace negotiations (its pretty shit land, although I doubt as shit as that which the russians have grabbed since 2014 and have bombed the shit out of and militarised since).

There are probably more, but I can spout those few straight off.

Can Ukraine sustain this effort without more western help? I wouldn't say suggesting he is trying to get the west more involved is a conspiracy theory, not when he has been asking for this for yonks.

Foxy_Dread He certainly wants/needs more help, the main one being permissions to use hardware, particularly missile systems that he can hit targets deep within Russia with.

The Russian hypocrisy is almost laughable. They complain about Ukraine using western weapons against russian targets and then issue a barrage of North Korean and Iranian made hardware on Ukrainian civilian targets. They really are cunts.

At the very least Ukraine has popped the bubble of Russian military might by showing Russia#s overlong western border to be porous. Russia has nothing to defend it's borders from NATO other than the threat of nukes.
