Be realistic here. VAT isn't going to stop the rich from accessing private education, just the poorer end of the spectrum - which includes people with SEND kids and kids with disabilities trying to find the only solution to the piss poor coverage of our education system. I doubt you'll have much company storming the Winter Palace over this one. It's just class war sound bites for the Labour faithful.

space I think you're over-egging the kids who at at public school because of their disabilities. If it was up to me I'd close all public schools tomorrow - the whole concept of them is wrong on many levels. UK education is not just piss poor for disabled kids - it's piss poor for everyone and has got progressively worse since the 80's and Thatcherism's draconian cuts to the education system.

One would have thought that rich parents taking their kids out of international schools in the UK would help their immigration numbers. Which must present the rich right wing parents with a dilemma. They don't want immigration unless it's they who are immigrating.

The disabilities thing is an example of how poorly thought out "Class War" policies are going to have collateral damage attached to them. And once again in a slightly louder voice this time... It's not the "rich right wing" that will be affected by this. It will be the people on lower income 5that will no longer be able to get their kids into private education.

If education for the under 18s is to be considered a luxury and is taxable then does this also cover university education? I guess the logical next step is to charge VAT on private healthcare - that's just a posho thing too, right?

space Nobody is saying education is to be considered a luxury. Private education is divisive and serves the rich privileged few. Invariably it is biased whether along religious lines or others and is not 'for all' as it should be. It gives those who are already privileged even more privilege and when taken to the extremes it has been leaves us with cunts like Johnson and Mogg wandering around fucking the rest of the country.

In a proper society there should be no need for private healthcare or private education. The state should provide and everybody should be given the same opportunities and not allowing a privileged monied few to gain at the expense of the rest of us.

I would charge VAT on private everything and ensure they pay their fucking taxes properly.

I know plenty of people who have had private secondary educations and they come from families that are neither rich or privileged. VAT would put it out of the reach of those people and not the rich. It's an non-means tested luxury tax on something that shouldn't be considered a luxury.

It's just fucking class war. And it's also a distraction. They're throwing out this bone to rile up the faithful who won't notice that their pockets are about to be pinched.

If you can afford to spend money on private education then you are rich. The vast majority of us can't. Not only are they rich, they expect the rest of us plebs to help make them richer by not taxing them properly (VAT in this case) and therefore denying those funds raised to go to the state education budget. If they want private education then they must pay the appropriate taxes on it. I can't see an argument why they shouldn't. Regardless of class.
