I have taken to walking to work and running home. It is roughly two miles - I can vary my routes - I think this might be the answer for me. Not too much in one go but a chance to get exercise in. 20 miles a week has to help.

Just finished Santa Fun Run. Proper sweaty, 29.27. Fucking hard course. Lots of money raised for charity, so there you go.

Cheeky little 4.9 mile run in 39:43 today. Burnt off some of that Xmas food! Also practised some TKD patterns outside the woods and got some strange looks from the dog walkers!

That should read 'miles' not 'kms'. I wasn't walking...

I know it’s a bit of a cliche saying stuff like this a few days after new year’s, but I’ve signed up to do the Great North Run. Raising money for CALM. Slightly crapping myself because I’ve never run beyond 10km and only managing about 5-7km at the moment (plus I’m 55 soon…) I’ve got a good eight months to shape up though. Any tips will be very gratefully received!

fulmine Keep practising, don't go too fast and build up slowly. That's what I would do, anyway.

Slowly build. Sprints and short midweek, longer plodder at the weekend.

It's years since I ran any proper distances but I'd try and find someone to train with.
I used to get bored as hell running long distances.
I went to see a physio as well as the warm up/stretching exercises they suggested probably prevented me getting injured.

fulmine good luck. I've done a fair few halves.

I'd also suggest trying to enjoy it and make sure you do a couple of thirteen mile runs before the big day. Think about some hiit training as well to help the core.
