Just finished. Harlem 69. Very good. Overall theme of the beginning of soul and jazz to mutate into disco, funk, jazz funk, soul rock etc, but the best bits are, like the other books, where he digresses off the beaten track. For example he starts off describing Stevie Wonder’s appearance at ‘Black Woodstock’ but then goes off to relate the story behind Sunny and its writer Bobby Hebb.
Sections on Donny Hathaway, Betty Davis, blacksploitation movies and soundtracks, Black Panthers, and the Apollo amongst others, and loads of fascinating details around the edges.
