Djpekingman I've always been aware that my hearing is somewhat raised.
Our electric oven fascia buzzes at a certain frequency, and I can kill the buzz by tapping my finger on the front. My wife can't hear it, but when I tune into it, it's like a freakin' fly buzzing round the kitchen
When I was a nipper, I had a 'turn' in my eye, and I've squared that by telling myself that the deficiency in my eyesight, is countered by my super power! Mind you, I don't think Professor Charles Francis Xavier will be knocking at my door, and I'd really struggle to lift his wheelchair, to get him over the threshold.
When I was at Wharfedale as a young whipper-snapper in the 80's (I'd be about 22/23 at this time), I inveigled myself into the listening room, used by the acoustic designers to test and sign-off their speakers.
One of them that I became friendly with asked me to sit down and listen to what he was building. I didn't know the source material (Joni Mitchell, Cat Stevens, Rickie Lee Jones), I asked them if they had any China Crisis! Anyhows, when he asked me what I could hear, I articulated it in such a way that they asked me to come into that department every morning for a couple of hours, and they'd put allsorts behind an acoustically transparent curtain, so that I couldn't see the size of the speakers, or if indeed they were Wharfedale speakers, and tell them what I was hearing.
Interestingly, the speakers that I have now (well the 80s variant), were on the shelf, and often on stands when the curtain was pulled back.
Whenever they needed to send a matched pair down to one of the hi-fi magazine reviewers, I got involved in that. As well as setting up the demonstration rooms at Hi-Fi shows and dealer nights.
As a footnote, I'm listening to Joni Mitchell right now and will be pulling out the Cat Stevens and Rickie Lee Jones CD's later.
I top out at 15kHz now, as do many people of our age.
