I suppose he has reflected on his actions and been horrified by them, that is a positive. Some people go their entire lives without reflecting on any of their actions at all. We all do and say very foolish things at times, sometimes awful things and then reflect quietly about it and never do it again. He has openly come out with it. I see Barnes’ view too. I respect him for offering this opinion in the face of the overwhelming backlash.
Edited to say that I don’t understand how anybody could feel like this, but then again, I have never had a close friend raped either, thank God. I would like to think that my reaction would not be like his, but who can say what lurks deep within us?
