I'm a fan of the original novels and of the various films that have been made of them, which are all quite different from each, but with each having something going for it. I couldn't quite see the point of another version of the original book because it had been done so well not so long ago with Matt Damon, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow. So I put off watching this series after the episodes were released, but when I go round to it: well, it's fantastic. It's shot in a style somewhere between the great Italian films of the 40s and 50s and various black and white Hitchcocks. Very slow paced, which ratchets up the tension and allows the characters to develop, as well as taking in the wonderful scenery, art and architecture. I've not previously particulary liked Andrew Scott that much but I thought he was excellently blank with hints of prissiness . Even the big change in the portrayal of Freddie Miles worked quite well, with no attempt to match Philip Seymour Hoffman.
I really do hope there are further series as there are 4 more Ripley novels they can adapt
