Looking for a film to see last Sunday, the choice in Leeds was poor. Noticed that Maradona film was on at The Picture House in York.
Pretty surprised as I thought it was due for release on 14th.
Anyhow, lovely cinema on the river in York. The folk in there looked to me nothing like people who would be interested in Maradona. Very much a Guardian Culture section crowd, apart from me and my chav looking kids.
I was unsure that the film would hold the kids or my attention for the 130 mins but to theirs and the film makers credit it was compelling viewing. For me, Id seen a lot of the footballing footage and knew the back story but I was kept interested throughout.
The film is mainly shot through old film clips so a bit grainy in parts.
its well worth a watch at the cinema. The music score was brilliant I thought, built tension when needed and had an Andean feel to it all the way through adding to the Mayan look of Maradona himself.
Naples looked mental then!! The chants from them and the other Italians were disturbing in content I found interesting as they seemed more historical and at a more intelligent level than any English chants at the time.
Really enjoyed it, as did the kids.
