Great to meet WD. Fine gent, I owe him a drink..
Wilco are not everyones cup of tea. But for me they’re a proper rock band but from a country perspective. They seem to mould Woody Gutherie, The Band, CSN&Y with Talking Heads and Radiohead.
The set started with two or three acoustic guitar led low key tunes, very pleasant but could sense it was just the relaxing mood music to allow for the climactic build of the louder guitar and drums drive set.
A 2 hour set flew by, 25 songs or so. Interjected with me and WD taking it in turns to schlep all the way to the basement for a lag and get a drink. WD narrowly missing Via Chicago he had to make a dive into the downstairs bit on his way back from the khazi.
The venue, for those not been is in an old Baptist Church which is on 3 levels and a basement where the toilets are. The ground floor has been turned into Alberts Schloss. A cool looking beer place that does food. Completely separate to the gig place but sure it was part of it at some point. Seemed to remember it being a long bar for the gigs in years gone past.
Floors 1 and 2 are the music venue. We sat on 2 right slap bang in line with the middle of the stage and at the back and had a belting view.
I dont know every Wilco song or the lyrics but I always come away from seeing them live elated and happy with the world (might be the ale). Uplifting Americana with a motorik drum beat with punky guitar riffs wrapped round catchy melodies seems to do it for me.
