Let it go man! There were tons of stories about the soash, we had a ghost tenant in our student hovel that the landlord installed to claim, said we wouldn’t see much of this fella but he’d come round and pick up his checks. All very naughty and frowned upon now but it was the only way some people could survive (just like now, but it’s much harder to fiddle). That same house now has a blue plaque cos it’s where The Quarrymen recorded and album - landlord had told us that at the time and we thought he was just a lying get, we even investigated the basement where the studio had been, couldn’t see any trace. When I first arrived I was living at the top of Smithdown Road where it meets Upper Parliament Street, came home during my first week away from home to find a copper in riot gear stationed right at the top my street - told me I couldn’t go down the street, said it’s where I live, he said right, get inside, lock the door, and don’t come out until tomorrow morning - I wasn’t used to that sort of shit going on. Went back 2 years ago for a reunion with mates from that time, first thing that struck me was how tiny the city centre is. Lots of new development everywhere and the shopping arcade right downtown is enormous, but some of the great pubs still there. Still a great night out.
