This really ought to be a sticky because it's said so often, but the pre sale period is effectively a massive waiting room with thousands of doors. You don't know what order the doors will open, or whether some of them will even open at all. So you can't stand by a particular door. You might as well stand anywhere , and that's what the system does until the sale opens at which time the doors randomly open and you are allocated a position in the queue which bears no relation to the time you entered the waiting room. That is the ballot/lucky dip element. You have the same chance if you enter the waiting room one minute before sale or when the waiting room first opens.
If you enter the waiting room AFTER the doors are opened then you will automatically go to the back of the queue.
If you open up different browsers and use different machines that benefits you only because, as someone said earlier, you are effectively buying extra tickets in the lottery.
It sounds complicated written down but it's as simple as anything. Get in before the sale goes live and you will be randomly placed in the queue. You could get straight in, you could have to wait over an hour. Apart from opening more browsers and tablets/phones there is nothing you can do to game the system, and even then you may find that you are still towards the back of the queue.
