I’d been sitting on this for a month or two. It’s huge, 800 pages or so. I’m 100 pages in and it’s really not that enjoyable a read. Writing is very ho hum (“Freeport, Long Island may only have been a 45-minute train journey from Manhattan, but it was a world aw…” and you can fill in the rest in your sleep). Lots of stuff about how the bass is different on a demo version of blah blah, I don’t mind that stuff if it’s really interesting, but this is the equivalent of match reports padding out a sports bio. Worst of all, the writer very patronisingly calls out spelling mistakes in other coverage, even letters from Lou Reed’s archive, which always seems a slightly desperate, unwarranted move. And then, of course, the next page will have a stonking great typo.
Anyway, I’m going to stick with it, see if things improve (at 30 quid they better have).
