Yeah but who cares? Did you like it? That’s the question. Unless you’re planning on going to book groups with Will Self and Harvard professors of literature I wouldn’t get hung up on that stuff. One of the academics in our group could be guaranteed to come out with some pretentious guff every month, usually followed by an embarrassed silence before someone said “aaaanyway, I did like Pauline Black’s descriptions of life on tour...”. I guess it depends on the people in the group and what you read. We’re an odd bunch but we all like music, we chat about the book and we chat about the music. It gets you reading new books and it gets you out of the house.
All art criticism is largely bollocks. Music, art, film - the key question is how does it make you feel? Judge it on that than rather what they were trying to say or whatever.
